WordPress 101 For Small Biz

WordPress 101 For Small Biz

While WordPress is a powerful tool for all types and sizes of business, Media Components particularly loves using WordPress for our small business clients and startups. We put together a list of FAQ’s to help shine some light on why WordPress is our most utilized content management system:

What is WordPress?

WordPress is a content management system (CMS) that allows companies like us to build websites that are versatile, user-friendly, and customizable for your particular business.

What is a CMS?

Content management (CM) is a way of managing your online content such as your weekly blog. A content management system (CMS), such as WordPress, is a computer application that allows you to create, publish, manage, and store content on your web pages from a central interface. This content can be text, graphics, photos, videos, or audio files- any type of web-based media that communicates information to your audience.

What is content marketing?

Content marketing is method of delivering information in a way that adds value instead of simply advertising your products and services. It’s a non-sales communication where you authentically engage in a relevant dialogue with your clients and prospects. By consistently delivering valuable information to your target audience, you can convert them into loyal customers. Marketing is impossible without great content!

What is WordPress?

WordPress was started in 2003 by a core team of developers, but, as an open source project, anyone can freely use, change, or share the software. Hundreds of people from all over the world work to improve WordPress, so it’s always evolving. Because it’s open source, you can use WordPress without paying anyone a license fee!

Why we love WordPress?

First of all, let’s reiterate: It’s free!!! …which makes it great for small businesses. You will still need to purchase a host to run and store your site, but WordPress is an affordable way to grow your business helping you to save and to make money. If in the future as your business grows, you need to add capabilities/functions, move things around, or completely change the look of your website, we can handle those requests relatively easily without starting from scratch.

Doesn’t free mean cheap? We want our website to be the best it can be.

Many times free equates with lousy quality, but we can assure you that’s certainly not the case with WordPress. WordPress is powerful, constantly improving application with features that open up a world of endless possibilities for establishing and promoting your brand on the web.

What about widgets, plugins and themes?

A theme is a group of files that work together to create the design and functionality of a WordPress site so that we don’t have to start building from scratch. Think of a theme as a template- it starts you out with your layout, fonts, and colors.

Plugins are tools to add to the functionality of WordPress. There are thousands of them available, so you can easily add features to your site. You can add plugins that will help with SEO, display a contact form on your website, or organize your photos into an attractive looking gallery. Some plugins are free, some have a monthly rate, and some have a one-time purchase price.

Widgets are easy-to-use tools that you can drag and drop when building your website. They can be added, arranged, and removed easily, and they’re usually located in a certain section or area of your theme. Most WordPress themes come with widget-ready areas already built in- like the header, footer, or sidebar. Widgets can allow you to add a search box, a recent posts area, a tagcloud, or a link to your social media sites.

If you are ready to launch a new website or revamp your current site, Media Components will help your small business to create a professional looking site that will deliver your content in a way that best fits your particular needs.
